Margaret Wells
Founder One Day at a Time, ODAAT

Margaret “Mom” Wells was born in North Carolina, where she was raised in humble beginnings as a sharecropper. From an early age, she understood the value of hard work, resilience, and faith, principles that would guide her throughout her life. Seeking greater opportunity, Margaret later moved to New York City, where she worked as a teacher’s aide, continuing her commitment to service and care for others.

She eventually made her way to Philadelphia, where she met Henry “Rev” Wells. Known for her strength and discernment, Margaret was not easily impressed, but Henry’s persistence, his smile, and his signature cowboy boots ultimately won her heart. Their union would become the foundation of a legacy that would impact countless lives.

Margaret was the embodiment of unconditional love. She loved deeply and without hesitation, extending that love not only to her husband and son, but to every individual who crossed her path. As Henry began his journey in recovery and opened their home to others in need, Margaret stood beside him, fully embracing the call. She played a vital role in the early days of what would become One Day at a Time (ODAAT), helping to create a safe, nurturing environment for individuals seeking a new way of life.

Her commitment was not without sacrifice. Margaret gave of herself selflessly, often putting her own comfort, and at times her safety, on the line to uplift others. She poured into people with compassion, strength, and a quiet but unwavering dedication that helped shape the culture and heart of the organization.

Margaret Wells’ legacy is one of love, sacrifice, and service. She set a standard for what it means to truly care for others and to lead with both strength and grace. Her influence continues to live on through the work of ODAAT and through all those who were touched by her presence.

As often said, “W stands for Wells—but it also stands for work.”
